Art To 3D Model - Preview

Post by Crypton » Fri Oct 30, 2009 3:09 pm

Yesterday, I've started working on tool that will be able to convert Art into 3D model :) And today, I'm almost finish :)

I've choose a 3DS format for converted Art, because its well supported, binary and more advanced than Ase format. Here you can download converted armor I selected:
--><--

Or 'bumpy' new arcane shield:
--><--

How to load this file into 3DS Max or Blender? Just click on import and select 3DS file :)

It could be finished sooner, but originally I wrote this tool to generate Ase files, which are text only and easier to implement, after I had Art2Ase tool finished, I realized that there is no import plugin for newer versions of 3DS Max, so I needed to install blender, and install import script, which was pretty buggy.

So I switched to 3DS format, which has its own limitations too, and its much harder to implement, but its price of comfortability :)

No, really, we were talking of "un-rendering", but i never imagined you'll be able to implement such a tool so fast. It's obviously far from perfection, but hey - ... :)

Well, now we find out that this tool is completely useless :D At least I've learned 3DS format, so I can make loader for our engine if needed.

Now generated 3DS files are not much helpful when modeling, because its flat model, without details, so I was thinking about adding some depth by calculating normal map, and changing vertex z position by this normal map, so model will be 'bumpy' and not flat :)

I'll see what I can do :)

EDIT: Okey, I'm happy :) I've finished my normal map generator, and I've applied this on generated vertices, so now I have 'bumpy' model :) not just flat plane....
